Diabólico / Devilish

Diabólico / Devilish was written for the Tango Siempre septet and first performed at the Purcell Room London.

Diabólico takes as its starting point the notion of the diabolic in Argentine tango music and the works of Astor Piazzolla, as well as a wider consideration of the diabolic in music history. Piazzolla’s own diabolic works include the Romance del Diablo which challenges conventional notions of the devilish. Diabólico is cast within the form of a traditional-contemporary tango instrumental piece but continually challenges the harmonic and tonal language that normally drives the structure of such works. Its scoring is the traditional “septeto tipico” that is similar to the makeup of Piazzolla’s larger scale ensembles.
